Proactive Roleplay

Note by Founder of DE : i found a series of articals that best show rules and guidelines for FFRP and Semi-FFRP instead of trying to outdo them or wright something compartive to them i have used them as a base and added or subtracted when nessicary to better suit the channel . all rights and respect go towards the authors of these articals.

Proactive Roleplay is where a character takes an action that directly or indirectly forces an action on another character, without the permission of that characters mun. The most extreme examples of this are the "one move kills" that are sometimes seen, but can range downward all the way to a simple entrance macro. Ex:

* PC-A enters the room, his brilliant smile immediately drawing the attention of all the ladies in the room, and inspiring jealousy in the hearts of all the men.

There are a few small problems with this entrance, most notably, PC-A is temporarily taking control of all the characters in the room, forcing a certain response on them, even if they would normally care less. Admittedly, this is a minor case, but the most common version of Proactive Roleplay I see is in fights, the "auto-hit" I call it, and autohits are not permitted under any curomstance in #Dark_Eternity , though in a case like this the founder or op would just mention to the player that they need to alter there entrance.

PC-A: "I am a far better man that you are PC-X"
* PC-X drawing his sword in his left hand, "We shall see about that wont we?"
* PC-A grins evilly and draws his own double edged sword and slashes across PC-X's left forearm, causing PC-X to drop his blade and stagger back.

OK. PC-A assumes that he will hit his target, and forces three actions on PC-X,
. It causes PC-X to take damage to his forearm
. It causes PC-X to loose his weapon
. It causes PC-X to move
This is all well and good if PC-X and PC-A have planned this fight, but more likely than not PC-X will now engage in some proactive role play of his own to get out of it.

* PC-X sees the blow coming and quickly casts a binding spell on PC-A, immobilizing him before his sword is fully drawn

As you can see, it is easy to do, and not entirely wrong. I have seen very experienced role players as well as total newbies do it, however common it is, and though it isn't exactly "wrong" it isn't quite "right" either. A better way to run the whole section might be:

PC-A: "I am a far better man that you are PC-X"
* PC-X drawing his sword in his left hand, "We shall see about that wont we?"
* PC-A grins evilly and draws his own double edged sword and slashes at PC-X's left forearm, in an attempt to make PC-X drop his blade and take a step back.

As you can see, the difference isn't all that great, but the options for the counter are much greater now. Here are two:

* PC-X dodges aside, his own blade coming up to parry the blow before he kicks at PC-A's knee with his right foot.

What happened here is that PC-X, now able to control his actions chooses to block the swing, he can also choose to accept the hit.. as below:

* PC-X winces as the blade slices into his forearm seconds before he gets it out of the way, barely retaining his grip on his own blade, and kicks at PC-X in a cold rage.

In this case PC-X has chosen to take the damage, but has decided that a simple cut to the forearm isn't enough to make him drop his weapon PC-X could also choose to have everything PC-A wanted to happen, but it will be on his terms. This brings us to the most extreme case of proactive role play: the "one move kill" in which a PC kills another PC not only without the permission of that PC's mun, but without even a good fight.

* PC-A becomes enraged at PC-X and swings with a well timed punch that decapitates him, killing him instantly.

Now the problem with this should be fairly obvious. PC-A has just forced PC-X to die. A better way to do this might be:

* PC-A becomes enraged at PC-X and swings at him with a well timed punch aimed at his lower jaw.

Keep in mind that if any action you take, from entering a room to attempting to kill another person forces another PC, ANY other PC to do something instantly, without their mun typing anything at all into the keyboard and without that mun's permission, it's proactive role play.
